How Much Carpet Do I Need?

Carpet is sold by the square yard
Room area in square feet divided by nine gives square yards, but that's only the starting point. A 12-foot-wide carpet roll has to be laid out so seams land in low-traffic, low-light areas, which means some waste.
Why you need more than the room area
Seam placement, pattern repeat and the roll width all add material. A room wider than the roll needs a seam, and the carpet has to run the same direction on both sides of it — which creates offcuts you still pay for.
Pattern match changes the math
A patterned or Berber carpet has to match at the seam, which can add several inches of waste per seam. A solid, textured carpet wastes less.
Stairs are measured separately
Stairs are counted by the tread and riser, not by floor area, and a curved staircase uses more. We measure every tread and the landing.
Why professional measuring matters
Measuring too little means a visible patch-in seam; measuring too much means paying for carpet you don't need. We measure the room, closets, doorways and stairs and plan the seam layout before you commit.
Your free estimate gives you the real number
We bring the measuring, the layout and the installed price to your home for free, so you know exactly how much carpet your project takes and what it costs installed.
