Start with the slab, not the sample
Before we talk products in a basement, we look at the concrete: is it flat, is there any staining or efflorescence, is there a floor drain, has it ever taken water? A floor that's wrong for the slab fails no matter how good the material is.
Why luxury vinyl usually wins
LVP and LVT aren't wood, so seasonal humidity doesn't move them the way it moves solid hardwood or the core of a laminate plank. Rigid-core luxury vinyl over a prepped slab is our most common basement recommendation in Macomb and Oakland County homes.
When carpet still makes sense downstairs
If the basement is dry, finished and used as a family or play space, a low-pile or Berber carpet with the right pad is warmer and quieter than any hard surface, and it costs less installed. Carpet tile is a smart middle ground because a damaged section can be replaced.
What we avoid below grade
Solid hardwood, and laminate in any basement with a moisture history. If you want the wood look down there, a wood-visual LVP gets you the appearance without the risk.
Ask this during your estimate
What is this specific product rated for below grade, what underlayment or moisture barrier is included, and how flat does my slab need to be? Those three answers separate a floor that lasts from a callback.
