Pad does more than the carpet

A carpet's feel, quiet and longevity are heavily set by the pad underneath. A great carpet over the wrong pad will mat early and feel hard; the right pad keeps a carpet feeling new for years.

Density matters more than thickness

A dense, firm pad supports the carpet backing so the fiber isn't crushed under traffic. A thick, soft pad can actually void a manufacturer warranty and cause the carpet to wear faster. We recommend density first.

Rebond, memory foam and fiber pad

Rebond (the multi-color recycled pad) is the standard for most rooms. Memory foam pads feel softer but can bottom out under heavy traffic. Synthetic fiber pad is what we use in basements because it resists moisture better than foam.

Matching pad to the carpet

The carpet manufacturer usually specifies a minimum pad for the warranty to be valid. We match the pad to the carpet you chose — a Berber needs a firm, thin pad; a plush takes a slightly softer one.

Basement pad is different

Below grade, we use a moisture-rated pad and never a bedroom pad. This is the single most common mistake in basement carpet, and it's why some basement carpet fails early.

Don't upgrade pad to hit a sales number

We quote the pad that fits the carpet, not the most expensive pad we carry. If a thicker pad is genuinely better for your carpet and traffic, we'll say so — and explain why.

Answers

Questions homeowners ask

Is a thicker pad always better?
No. Density supports the carpet better than thickness, and a pad that's too thick can void the manufacturer warranty and cause early wear.
What pad do you use in a basement?
A moisture-rated synthetic fiber or rebond pad — never a standard bedroom foam pad, which holds moisture.
